Slip Into Spring – Why The 90s Slip Dress Will Never Go Out of Style

I have so much love for the 1990s! It’s the decade I was born into, and fashion-wise featured myriad wonderful creations and spectacles that continue to influence countless designers including myself.

The slip dress was ‘The Dress’ of the 90s, famously associated in particular with designers Calvin Klein, Narcisco Rodriguez and Dior and immortalised by countless stars.

To celebrate the slip dress and it's continuing legacy, I've narrowed down my favourite 90s slip dress fashion moments to just three, and I think they all illustrate the timelessness and relevance of the slip dress in their own way.

For his Dior debut in 1996, John Galliano dressed Princess Diana in a midnight blue maxi evening slip with black lace trim. I remember seeing that image as a 6 year old girl and falling in love with the effortless elegance of her in that long bias cut slip – beautiful in it’s simplicity and completely unforgettable.

The slip dress was also a favourite with Rachel Green in Friends. The seminal show aired in 1994 and ran for 10 seasons until 2014, during which time Rachel continued to champion that cute, flirty and oh-so-wearable slip dress look. She wore it in mini, midi and maxi lengths, and – my personal favourite – layered it over a T-shirt for an easy, understated day look that we still imitate today.

Last but never least, I must mention Kate Moss – the Queen of the slip dress. Kate continues to dazzle in a never-ending stream of slinky slip dresses, but it was the iconic shot of her and Naomi Campbell in 1996, both glorious in iridescent Versace, that captured my imagination. Together, they are the epitome of 90s glamour in their silver mini slip dresses.

Always keen to keep garment shapes simple and wearable and inspired by the history of this classic dress, it has always had a place in my past collections. Previously I have focused on cute mini slips and easy camisole tops in a light silk crepe, featuring my trademark intricate hand illustrated prints.

The real appeal of these slip dresses is that they are so easy to wear – throw on with a strappy heel and a statement earring for a fun 90s nostalgia outfit that is anything but dated, or layer over a plain white tee with trainers and denim jacket for day. For a dressed down look in chillier weather, style over a polo neck or under a sweater and add tights. The possibilities are endless, and this versatile dress really can work for you all year round.

My new collection will include slip dresses featuring brand new print designs in sumptuous silk satin. These slips will be in super cute mini length as well as a more sophisticated longer option, inspired by the beauty of iconic maxi slips of the 90s.

I aim to create pieces to last and as such always stick to shapes and silhouettes that I believe are truly timeless. In my view the slip dress is eternally stylish, and will always be a true, everlasting classic.
